Questionaire on my magazine

To see if my magazine would be a sucess with my target audience, i give females, in the age range of between 16-24 a short questionaire to see if they would be interested in my magazine .

From my feedback i now feel that i achived what i wanted to. Most of my answers came back with all positive answers, therefore i could only create two pie charts on questions that i didnt get the same answer for thoughout all the questions.

My feature article.

This is my feature article, this was the final peice that i created. I picked this image as it is very mysterious, which contasts with the article as the article is about her revealing her secret this image, the image also has very good diret address, which will help draw the reader into the article.  As the image contains of quite dull colours, i felt that the pink writing outlining the questions i asked and the quotes i have pointed out helps draw the reader in more, as the magazine is for young adults, if the page was completley just black and white the reader would not want to read the article as it wouldnt look interesting to them. The quotes on the right hand image was picked out delibiratly, 'he took me up the Eiffel Tower... But my career is my main priority at the moment" this are two completely different quotes picked out from different parts of the article, i felt that if the reader read this then they might have a feeling that she rejected him.

My contents page

I wanted to follow the same look from the front cover in the contents page as they as supposed to link.
To do so i used a different but very similar image of my model in the contents page that use the same colours and same props and in the cover image.
I always followed the same text font and layout as on the front cover but smaller, i didnt want the contents page to be covered in text and it is for young adults, therefore i picked 7 articles to promote onto my contents page and a regular section at the bottom of the page.
Unlike the front cover, on the page i brought more of the blue into the page, using blue and the bottom of the text which is promoting the magazines website and twitter page, and again across the top of the page which just states the release date of the magazine.

My front cover

This is my front cover from the project that i have produced over the past few weeks, after weeks of researching different magazines, i had a clear idea of what i wanted my magazine to turn out like, from the start i knew i wanted my magazine to be aimed specifically for females aged from around 16-26, i always wanted this magazine to contain fashion aswell as the main point to this magazine, music.
After a number of times of taking photos i managed to pick one for my front cover, i chose this image as with the also being a fashion magazine, this image has contents of fashion involved by using props such as handbags and jackets, also this image allowed me to work with the colours to link the whole front cover together, therefore i used the colour of her handbag to the important bits of the text i wanted to stand out to the reader.
I also put a list of artists that will feature in the magazine at the top of the magazine, by using the pink again, this will bring the reader to want to see what it says and then the artists might bring them to buying the magazine.

my progress

I have now made my front cover and contents page, i am now working on my contents page, and as i have got to this stage i feel that the pictures i have took for my article do not work with what i was aiming for and therefore i am going to try taking some more.
After going to take some more photos, i felt this would really work on the article.

Photo for the article

i wanted to take another picture for my article that is different from my front cover, as i wasnt sure if the pictures i have took would work for the article, therefore i thought id take on extra, very different image of my model.

This photo is very different from both my practice photos and my actually photoshoot. i thought as a large image in the article, this would really work with all the bright colours from both her clothing and the sorroundings, i had her in a bright coloured coat in this picture as i wanted her to really stand out and as the background was already bright, if she was in dull colours the background would dominate the image, even though i feel this image would work really well, there isnt any direct address which main not catch the readers eye very well, therefor i might take another shot which is stiking that will draw the audience in.

Photos for my contents page!

i needed to take somemore pictures of different people other than my main model for my photoshoot.

I edited this pictures to all be black and white as i want my main model to still cominate the page therefore she will be in colour. I took these pictures at a little gig i went to as my friend is already in a band, i thought this would work really well in my contents page and also represents music really well!

Front cover and contents page mockup!

Here are the mock ups i drew of my front cover and my contents page, i am still a little undecided on my name but at the minute i am thinking of going with the name 'beat route' for my magazine,

A want the image of my model to dominate the front cover, i have shown this is the image, i have also stated a few headings that could appear on the front of my magazine, as the magazine is aimed for the female audience, one of my headings is 'Top 40 sexiest male artists' There will also be a big heading on the front cover selling my feature article.

Here is my mock up of my contents page, the way i have drawn this is to have images as the main seller to show the reader what artists will appear in the magazine, i have also got a little bit of text stated what page the main articles will appear on. In the bottom left hand corner i have a space where there will be a short paragraph on the editor of the magazine (me)

Reader Profile

I created this reader profile to show a idea of the type of person my magazine would be aimed for. She is a 17 year old student, which the start of the age rage i am aiming for, she also has alot of interest in music and is a performer herself. My magazine is aimed for ordinary teenagers from the age 17 onwards and this a sample of a ordinary teenager.

Photoshoot

Here is a few images i took for my magazine front cover and article. I stuck to my idea of using this location for my photoshoot, and as stated in my prop intentions, i used the guitar to show her music side, and also used a bag to show she is a fashionable girl.

Location,costume and props my photoshoot

I have chosen the location of my photoshoot, as it actually is in my models bedroom, there is a very fancy wall that is black, white and flowery, i feel this behind my model would be great from the article inside the magazine, My next step is to now take the pictures.
As my model will be on a black and white background, i want her clothing to be colourful so therefore she will stand out. I want props to represent music, using a guitar or ipod, however as this magazine is targeted for the female audience i also thought of maybe using props such as handbags.

Practice photos Edited!!

i decided to try different editing techniques on my practice photos, i used www.picnik.co.uk to edit these pictures.
This image has very little been edited, as i wanted her to dominate this picture, i decided to blur the background slightly giving a more obvious focus on her. This really works as the background is now not very clear and not obvious what it is.

This again has the blurred background, however on this image i made the picture appear warmer and more obvious, unlike the soft tone to the image above. This edit outlines her features more, making her eyes appear darker, her lips much pinker and her cheeks much bigger, i feel if this image was on a front cover, on a shelf in a shot, it would really draw the audience in.

I went with a completely different effect on this one to the two above, i used what the website called 'HDR-ish' this really does outline her features! Even more to the image above. Out of all three edited images, i feel this one would work the best on a front cover.

Photos continued.

this shot is even closer, and i was suprised with the outcome, my first thought was that it would be to close, however i feel the eye contact showing though the shot would really relate to the audience, unlike the first distance shot, she really dominates the image, in the other the background seemed to take over to much, i feel this shot would really work on a cover, i have got good direct address, a cheeky smile and i still have the ipod in the shot. Out of all three i feel this shot worked the best when it comes to connecting with the audience.

Photos continued.

This time i tried something completely different to the first shot, as i felt the past shot was not close enough, this time, i shot it closer, i wanted her to appear more serious than previously, therefore she comes across as mature, i still used the iPOD however i just had the headphones showing. I feel the distance of the shot works very well for a cover, however i feel the shot is too serious. Even though i like the distance i wanted to try the shot even closer to compare them.

Photos

As i have decided on my model, i wanted to try a range off different shots for practice, to see what works at what doesn't.
This first shot is a medium shot, i used direct address as i thought this would work a lot better on a front cover.
I wanted her to appear fun and appealing to the audience. I used a iPOD to show her interest in music as she is supposed to be a music artist.
I feel this picture would work well on a front cover, however would not appear brilliant. i feel the shot should be slightly closer, so the audience can relate to her more.

MoodBoard

When making this moodboard, i had to think about what genre of artists i wanted in my magazine, therefore i tried to get many different types of artists that dont have much in common, however, that were all still popular, therefore including artists that are in the chart right now, owl city, katy perry, and pixie lott just to name a few. However i added Glee in, even though this would not be stated as a music artists but a tv show, it is still very popular and in the charts at the minute.

Top 20

This is the lastest top 20, this list includes a number of genres including RnB, Dance, Indie. therefore a mixed genre magazine would be open to a wide audience. The chart chances weekly, however there doesnt seem to be much change between 2 weeks, therefore there would be no need to have my magazine as a weekly mag, and would be better monthly.

Here is the top 20.
1 OWL CITY FIRE FLIES
2 GLEE CAST DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'
3 IYAZ REPLAY
4 3OH3 FT KATY PERRY STARSTRUKK
5 SIDNEY SAMSON FT WIZARD SLEEVE RIVERSIDE
6 JLS ONE SHOT
7 ALICIA KEYS EMPIRE STATE OF MIND (PART II)
8 JOURNEY DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'
9 EXAMPLE WON'T GO QUIETLY
10 JAY-Z FT MR HUDSON YOUNG FOREVER
11 ALEXANDRA BURKE BROKEN HEELS
12 LADY GAGA BAD ROMANCE
13 SATURDAYS EGO
14 N-DUBZ FT MR HUDSON PLAYING WITH FIRE
15 JAY SEAN / SEAN PAUL / LIL JON DO YOU REMEMBER
16 KESHA TIK TOK
17 TIMBALAND FT KATY PERRY IF WE EVER MEET AGAIN
18 JAY-Z FT ALICIA KEYS EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
19 PLAN B STAY TOO LONG
20 JUSTIN BIEBER ONE TIME

Questionnaire results

I give my questionnaire to 10 people and then looked at the results to see if my magazine would be a hit, from looking at my questionnaire the answer would be, yes it would be hit, as most people said that they would buy a magazine with popular artists and gossip. Here are a couple of piecharts showing questions that were ask and the results that i got.

I thought that a easy way to show my results for my questionnaire was by a pie chart. What type of genres are most popular as very important, as my magazine has to be based on these genres, and the front cover has to show this. From my results indie came out as the most popular genre, followed by dance and pop.

I was very unsure about a magazine name and this was also a question asked on my questionnaire, i give a option of 4, and 'Beat Route' was the most popular followed by 'music fuel'. This has helped me little bit to decide on a name, however i am still unsure and am going to be thinking of more.

Contents page.

Looking for a contents page seemed to be even harder than finding a artical, i wanted to find a contents page that represented the genre of the magazine instantly, 'Vibe' is a well known RnB magazine, when i found this i thought that this did represent the genre well.
The reader can instantly tell that this is the contents page as the text is big and bold on a white background, however i think the dominant things on this page are the images, these tell the reader the kind of genre, RnB artists are mainly people of black ethnicity as they are known for there rap artists, as the pictures are all males from black ethnic background, this sets the genre of the magazine and therefore from a glance at this page is obvious what to expect.
The text on the contents page is much smaller compared to the text 'Contents' i took this as a way that the images are to draw the reader in, once there drawn in, then they will want to know what is in the magazine (which artists, and which storys). If a reader is not interested from the images than it is clear that this isnt a magazine that matches there music taste.
The advertisement of the magazine website 'Vibe.com' is for interested readers that enjoy the magazine and want to know more about different RnB artists that have not been included in the magazine. They promote the website by standing a few articles that can be read on there webpage.
There is a big contrast of colours on this contents page of dark and light, the background is all white, this is thge contrasted with the images and the text, as these are all mainly dark, this makes the page really stand out and therefore draws the reader in. As all the images are direct address this also draws the reader in as they relate to the artists.

Questionnaire

This the one a selection of my questionnaires that i have given out. this is one of my questionnaires completeted. I mentioned if they like to keep up with latest music, as if the majority of people didnt then my music magazine would not be a hit as this is they type of music the magazine is based on.

I put in a question in that asked them there age, this is to see if there was different answers given depending on there age. As i wish my magazine to be a modern music gossip magazine then i asked people by the questionaire if they like to keep up with celebrity gossip, as if mainly people did not then id have to change the purpose of my magazine to one that insterests most young adults.

If they would buy a magazine based on upcoming, chart artists is a key question to if my magazine would be a hit therefore this is a question i also asked.

My final question was on my magazine name, the magazine name is important to draw the reader in, it has to be catchy, this is why i give a option of 4 names that i have thought of and give a other for anybody that thinks of a catchy name for my magazine.

Questionnaire

I have chosen to create a questionnaire that will be given to people between the age groups of 16-24. This questionnaire will include questions on which genres they prefer, do they bough magazines, and also a question on the name of the magazine.

Feedback 29.01.10

Sarah,

Well done on this work. You are clearly working very hard on this project whaich is great to see. I'd like you to try to get the research completed this week and move on to planning the project. Don't forget to make some audience questionnaires and distribute. You will need to collate the findings and reflect on how they will inform your design ideas. Keep the questionnaires short and simple and use closed questions to allow you to make some charts/graphs etc to display the data.
Keep up the good work!

Analysed Band Images!!

So here i am again, searching google images, this time for posters and Cd covers of a particular artist. These Cd covers/posters ect, HAS to represt a artist. As i want my magazine to be based on popular chart music, or upcoming hit artists, i wanted the artist to fit into this catergory, and when thinking of who to do?? Then the artist Kesha come to mind! Kesha has become a popular artist nowadays, therefore the pubic are intrigued to know more about her.

Album covers have to really represent the artist style of music, this being pop/dance in keshas case. As kesha is known as a party girl, which is quite popular with the public lately, for instance aswell as kesha, there is lady gaga, i have noticed this from research, as in the 90's the artist had to be squeeky clean, nowadays nobody cares and tend to prefer the artist to losen up. Just looking at the album cover for TIK TOK, obviously tells the audience that this aint no girly girl, and can sence abit of attitude from the image. Also the use of direct address lets the audience connect with her personaly. The wrighting 'KESHA' and TIK TOK' is wrote in a edgey font, this represents her personality as she is a very edgey person.

This is Kesha's second single 'ANIMAL'. Kesha again has her name in a very edgey front. However this single is very different to TIK TOK, but just like the other cover, this one represents the single. As it is called animal, the image of kesha represents this. As you can sence a animal within the image, she has a very angry look to her as if she is going to pounce, the anger is clearly shown in her eyes. Her name written in gold contrasts against the dark background therefore really stands out, as her lips are edited gold aswell, this gives the audience a feel of importants and respect for her.
Both of these covers really represent each single in there own way!!

Circulation figures

When looking for music magazines circulation figures i came among a small list of magazines, most of them was rock/indie magazines, however i saw the name 'mix mag' so i thought ok this has to be a mixed genre magazine so i did a search on google to have a look at a few of the covers, and then the circulation figures started to make sense. Mixmag had 30,159 in the last 6 months when they was making 34,073 / 35,817. At first i wondered why are the sales going down, then looking at the cover i instantly thought i new why, the cover did not seem appealing at all, there seemed to be way to much going on, and way to many different colours, i felt the carl cox advertisment in the bottom left hand colour was very uncalled for and just took over the over compeletly, with having the interent as such a big competition nowadays as information on the interent is more likely to be free, covers have to be more appealing than ever.

As rolling stones is a very successfull magazine, i thought id take a look into there circulation figures. Rolling stones were classed in the Top 100 abc magazines, that is not just including music magazines but the whole of magazines. In 2004 rolling stones was ranked at number 68 and in 2005 i had gone down just one place to 69. In 2004 the circualtion figures were 1,267,110 and in 2005 it went up to 1,309,117, this is a percentage increase of 3.30%!!!! So how much rolling stones is a bigger hit with the public compared to mix mag, well i feel that the covers as so much more appealing, the information on rolling stones not to much but yet not to little, and the artists they use on the covers and more iconic than on mix mag.

Article analysis

Trying to find a magaizne article on the interent was a struggle, however i managed to find this 'pink' article. As i was flicking through a number of images, this particular article seemed to really catch my eye, and i had to have a look. I was very drawn in by the brightness of it, and i loved how the article really fit the artists style. The use of pink was obviously done deliberatly, as the article is done on 'pink' herself, and i found this quite eyecatching. The title of the article would be expected to have been the other way around, 'PINK-BAD GIRL FOR LIFE' this was on a black background and the used pthe girls pink and white for the text, instead of the predictable colour of using pink for her name and the white on the text 'bad girl for life' it was the other way around, i feel this was done to represent herself as she is not a predictable person, and the article is trying to get across that she is abit of a rebel. I love how the who article had been thought out alot, from not just the text itself but the background, there is pink scrubbles behind some of the text, this again is to represent her rebel side, but as it is in pink it also shows a girly side, as if she is saying she can be both. After looking at this article i thought 'what a good idea' i should do the article to represent the artist, not just from text and what the interview says but the whole layout and design so the reader knows exactly what to expect from the article.

Continued, conventions of a music magazine.

Just like the other magazines i have analysed, billboard is again for a teen audience, all three of these magazines are produced and sold in america, and due to research i feel there is a big gap in the market in the UK for a 16-24 music magazine which consists of all genres. This magazine cover has very little information on the front, all the cover is basically a picture of miley cyrus, and a quote from her which is more than likely i quote picked out from a interview with her. I feel that this is not a very good selling point as the reader does not know what else to expect from the magazine, for fans of miley cyrus, this would more than likely draw them in however for other readers, this might stop them wanting to buy it. The title 'Billboard' is filled in with primary colours, this represents young artists as we relate primary colours with younger people so this instantly shows that the magazine is aimed for a younger audience. The use of the colour red represents miley cyrus as rocky, however he clothes also contradict this as she is wearing white which represents purity. Over all i feel this magazine cover has its strong point such as the use of colour, however on my magazine cover i want to mention more thats in the magazine and mention a mixture of genres to draw a wide audience in.

Conventions of other magazine covers

Blender is a popular magazine in america, and the main audience for this magazine is late teens (16-24). Blender is a music magazine that covers a wide range of genres, and most of the genres are mention on the front covers, this opens the magazine in a wide audience, the cover mentions music from 'Katy perry' to 'Metallica' by stanting this artists, the audience knows what the expect in the magazine. The image on the cover is of 'Katy Perry' this and her name being in a bigger text than the other subheadings on the cover tells the reader who the issue is based on, and will then expect there to be a artical on her. Katy Perry is a very popular artist, and this is why they used her.The colours are very bright against the white background, and the main text is written in purple, making it stand out against the black. Direct address was used when taking the picture of katy perry, with katy perry looking straight out of the magazine cover invites the reader in. Just like this magazine i want my magazine to consist of all different popular artists, from a range a genres.

Conventions of a magazine cover

I chose to analyse a rolling stones front cover, as i felt it was aimed at very simalar age group that im aiming for with my magazine ideas. I feel this image fits the content of the magazine very well, by having 'the hills' stated in the front cover and having actresses from the hills on the front draws the correct to the correct age group they are aiming for, this is a big hit with teen audiences, from between the ages 16-24. As well as having the right age of audience, it is also very popular nowadays, therefore this would sell many copies. The colour shceme is mostly white and black. These two colours contradict each other, therefore the text really stands out against the black, also as 'THE HILLS' is much larger and bolder against the other texts, this istantly draws the reader to see this. The girls are also dressed in white this represents purity however this again is contrasted with the type of clothing they are wearing, the lack of clothing is aimed at the male population, as 'The Hills' is mainly aimed for females, the magazine had to attract male audiences some how, this does this. The colour of the title 'rolling stones' changes depending on the issue and the front colour, on this issue 'rolling stones' has been edited to be pink, this is because the issue is mainly aimed to females as this follows the hills audience. The image of the girls consists of both direct address and indirect address, the direct address draws the audience in to the celebrities, however indirect address has been used to make the girls appear fun, therefore audiences will want to know more about them. The brightness of this magazine would stand out on a shelf against other magazines that use common dark colours, therefore this will draw the audience into this particular magazine. There is the main subheading 'The Hills' and there are 4 more subheading in a smaller text to the right of the cover, these headings consists of the main stories they are advertising to sell the magazine. There is one Strapline going across the top, this states 'Inside a $25.000-a night escort service' this again is to draw the male audience in more, opening the magazine up to both males and females.

Preliminary Task

This im my preliminary task, a front cover for a school magazine. The image i used is of a student in the libary, i chose to set this in the libary, therefore the magazine will easily be recogizable as educational. I felt that the title of the magazine 'SMC' could of stood out more, to do this i would of filled the lettering in with the colour black or yellow. This dominant topic of the magazine was for A'levels, i felt that i made this clear as the text stands out onto the white faded background and the text is a rather large. I wanted to add colour into the text, this is why the colour yellow was chose. I feel that this will draw people to the magazine more, i used this colour for the topic 'Football Glory' as this topic is a proud topic for the college, i felt this colour represented that. I used a plain white background with the text 'New York 2010' i felt that this would draw students in and therefore would lead them to wanting to know more.
This is a rough hand drawn contents page, this was part of the premlminary task and here above is mine. I layed out so the text 'contents' was large and at the top, therefore this would make is easily recognisable to readers. I also wanted a image to dominate the page, so i placed the image in the middle of the page between the texts, this would be a image of who the magazine is mostly based on in that issue and would contain direct address, this would invite the reader in. I layed the text out at either size of the page, therefore it would be split up, so the reader doesnt have just a long list of text, the will draw the reader in to read more, and would be easier for them to scim the text to find articles that interest them.

Ideas

The project i have selected to do is the media magazine that will be based on chart music including pop and indie. i preferred this option due to me liking to work Independently and i also have more interest in the music industry. I chose to aim my magazine towards the female audience from ages 16-24 as I feel that there is a gap in the market for this.
